Phil Spector - Music Producer Spector To Face Murder Retrial In October

Music producer Phil Spector will fount a retrial for mutilate in October despite defense attempts to stop it, an appeals court in California has ruled.

Minnesota Senate Democratic Candidate Al Franken Advocates For Proposals To Lower Drug Prices For Seniors

Minnesota U.S. Senate Democratic candidate Al Franken on Wednesday said the federal government should negotiate with drug companies to lour seniors' drug prices, license re-importation of prescription medications from other countries and ban mass-market drug advertising, the St. Paul Pioneer Press reports. Franken aforementioned these proposals, which have been suggested by other candidates and in former years, could move forward if sufficiency Democrats are in the Senate side by side year (Stassen-Berger, St. Paul Pioneer Press, 7/30).



Franken said his opponent -- Sen. Coleman representative Mark Drake noted that the senator was one of six Senate Republicans who joined Democrats and voted to take up a vizor last year that would have allowed Medicare to negotiate do drugs prices. Drake added that Coleman would support government negotiation to lower prices if the measure guaranteed seniors would not be denied approach to needed medications (Minneapolis Star Tribune, 7/30). Drake added that Coleman would support authorizing drug re-importation from other countries if it did not bound access to common prescription drugs and the process was deemed safe (St. Paul Pioneer Press, 7/30).

Efterklang To Score Two Theatre Plays

Efterklang have wrapped-up their world tour of latest album Parades and will now score two theatre plays in their native Copenhagen, in conjunction with Teater GROB.

The first of the plays is 'En Plads i Mit Hjerte' (translation: a place in my heart) which premieres on August 23rd at Kaleidoskop in Copenhagen and the second is 'Som Hos Dig St�r' (no translation), due to premiere on November 17th at PLEX.

Rolling Stones' Ronnie Wood Artwork 'Flops' At Auction

A painting by Rolling Stones guitarist Ronnie Wood has failed to sell at auction, it's been revealed.



The picture, a limited edition portrait of Wood and his former Faces bandmate Rod Stewart, fell short of its reserve after it was put up for sale on eBay.



In order to attract bids, Wood advertised the painting on his social networking site, describing it as a “chance to snap up a real Ronnie print framed and ready to be hung, featuring your favourite rocker and pal Rod."



But the auction only attracted five bidders, with the maximum offer of £511 less than twice the reserve price of £1300.



According to reports, Wood has now withdrawn the item and its online description.

Lil Wayne's 'Tha Carter III' sells 1 million

NEW YORK - Lil Wayne now has official numbers to back up his bragging - the rapper's new CD has sold a spectacular one million copies its first week.

"Tha Carter III" is easily the best selling first week of the year, according to Nielsen SoundScan figures. Even Kanye West's "The Graduation" didn't eclipse that mark in its first week last year (though it was only about 50,000 copies short).

A prolific rapper who's been ubiquitous on the mixtape scene and on other acts' records, Lil Wayne is generally regarded as one of rap's most gifted performers - but he's never had a multiplatinum album. His last two albums, "Tha Carter" and "Tha Carter II," sold 1.1 million and 1.4 million copies, respectively. "Tha Carter III" was anticipated as the CD that would send the New Orleans rapper into superstardom.

Already, he's had a No. 1 smash for several weeks - the sexually explicit "Lollipop" - and has been featured on numerous hits over the past year, including the recent remix to Usher's "Love in This Club."

In a slumping industry where selling 200,000 albums in one week is becoming a rare feat, Lil Wayne's achievement is not only a triumph but a much-needed boost - the last CD to sell 1 million or more in its first week was 50 Cent's "The Massacre" in 2005.

Expectations for "Tha Carter III" were high, and it delivered - selling 423,000 copies in its first day of release. It achieved blockbuster numbers despite being heavily bootlegged and leaked on the Internet; past leaks of material for the CD caused Lil Wayne's label, Universal Motown, to delay its release several times.

Lil Wayne, 25, has been a star on the rap scene since he was a teen, but only in recent years has his star rivalled that of contemporaries like West and heroes like Lil Wayne - both of whom are contributors on his new CD.

Former Blink-182 man speaks about My Chemical Romance and 'emo' suicide

Former Blink 182 guitarist and vocalist Tom DeLonge has spoken out about the recent controversy surrounding My Chemical Romance and their suggested links with 'emo' suicides.

DeLonge told Buzznet that he had experienced similar controversy while in his former band. He defended My Chemical Romance, saying there was nothing abnormal about the content of their lyrics.

"The same sort of thing [being blamed for fans' behaviour] happened to me with Blink," he said, "so I can understand what it's like to be a part of something like that.

"We had a victim of the Columbine shootings take his life with our song on repeat. You kinda go through these situations where you blame yourself, but you can't.

"You have no idea who these people are. And My Chemical Romance, they spend a lot of time singing about coming together. There's ingredients of rebellion and angst, but what band doesn't have that when you're young?"

My Chemical Romance fans recently protested about the media's depiction of the band in London.

Emo music was recently criticised by sections of the media after Hannah Bond, a 13 year-old emo fan from Kent, committed suicide.

Girls Aloud & Spice Girl Members For X-Factor Judges?

Sharon Osbourne has revealed that both Mel B of the Spice Girls, and Girls Aloud's Cheryl Cole have both been approached to replace her as a judge on the next X-Factor series.

The fiery redhead announced that she was leaving the show after four years as a judge last week, and said that she is backing Cheryl to be her replacement.

Speaking on Radio 1, she denied that her choice to leave was due to money: "We were negotiating and they offered me an obscene amount of money. It didn't change anything. I had to walk away when I did," said Osbourne.

She also described the show as "the best four years of my life", saying that she loved working on it.

Previously, fellow judge Louis Walsh had left the show as a judge, only to return only days into the auditions. Will it be a repeat with Sharon?

Raconteurs shoot from the hip

Don’t let Jack White’s predilection for heavy retro blues and vintage guitars fool you. Always embroiled in hype, buzz, gimmick and genius rock, the White Stripes’ leader may be rock ’n’ roll’s quintessential modern man. Even when he aims to duck the spotlight, he crashes right into it.
On March 17, White and the members of his other band, the Raconteurs - fellow frontman Brendan Benson, bassist “Little” Jack Lawrence and drummer Patrick Keeler - announced they were releasing their second album, “Consolers of the Lonely,” in eight days. They weren’t sending advance copies to Rolling Stone to review or to MTV to stream; and they weren’t talking to the media.
Instead, the Raconteurs, who play the Bank of America Pavilion tomorrow, would be releasing “Consolers” in digital, CD and vinyl formats on March 25 so the album, according to a band Web posting, wouldn’t “be defined by it’s (sic) first weeks (sic) sales, pre-release promotion, or by someone defining it FOR YOU before you get to hear it.”



“I’m so tired of all the fears in the industry,” White said last week from a Washington, D.C., tour stop. “The fears of first-week sales or of free, leaked music, or music stores closing, or of the whole music industry collapsing. The White Stripes have been dealing with all these fears ever since we came above ground in 2002. I just wish whatever everyone’s so afraid of would happen already.”
The release strategy behind “Consolers” was an attempt to challenge the industry’s worries. But it fell right into them when it popped up on iTunes and spread across the Web four days earlier than planned.
“Somehow a glitch put the album up on iTunes and like 40 copies got sold,” White said. “But I’m still glad we did it.
“All it was about was getting it to the fans in every format at once,” he said. “And, on a selfish note, I’m also tired about the fears over how to release something these days. You have to do extra tracks for iTunes and do an exclusive AOL session and something for MySpace [website]. I don’t have time for all that in my life.”
But like Radiohead and Nine Inch Nails, whose latest albums also bucked traditional release trends, the subversion became the story, while the actual music was demoted to sidebar status. Which is a real shame in the Raconteurs’ case. “Consolers” is a glorious slab of brand new classic rock imbued with punk fervor.
“The first record was very haphazard and done off the cuff,” White’s hometown Detroit buddy Benson said, grabbing the phone from White. “We had to develop a chemistry and rapport on the first tour. That was the true beginnings of the band.”
Unlike their rushed first album, which is made up of the first 10 songs Benson and White wrote together, “Consolers” was culled from more than 20 songs written and arranged over two years. The outcome is something sprawling and dynamic, with heavy metal peaks and folk valleys found in the big rock of “Who’s Next” and Led Zeppelin’s “Zoso.”
“It’s kind of a powerhouse,” Benson said. “No one in this band strives to be normal. We’re all trying to poke out. The end result is a bigger-sounding thing than most.”
And it’s music that doesn’t need hype, buzz or gimmick to sell it.
“A musician is expected to be a salesman these days,” White said. “But I don’t want to be a salesman.”
Or, as he sings on “Hold Up”: “Had enough of these modern times/About to drive me out of my mind.”
